The Evolving Landscape of Special Education in the United States
Special education in the United States has undergone significant transformations since the landmark Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) was first enacted in 1975. This legislation guarantees students with disabilities the right to a free and appropriate public education (FAPE) in the least restrictive environment (LRE). While IDEA has undeniably made strides in improving access to education for students with diverse learning needs, challenges and ongoing debates continue to shape the landscape of special education today.

Funding Inadequacies: Many school districts struggle with inadequate funding for special education programs, leading to insufficient resources for specialized instruction, assistive technology, and support services.
Teacher Shortages: There's a critical shortage of qualified special education teachers across the country, impacting the quality of instruction and student outcomes.
Over-identification and Under-identification: Concerns persist regarding the over-identification of minority students in special education, while students from disadvantaged backgrounds may be under-identified and not receive the support they need.
